ATO - Fraudulent Rebate Claims

ATO Media Announcement A man obtained more than $3.8 million of taxpayer money by creating fake transport businesses and lodging false rebate claims for fuel between 2002 and 2006.

False identities were used to lodge 75 fraudulent claims for more than 20 million litres of fuel.

Following the investigation, it was found that no trucks were registered to the businesses at the time, and searches at the man’s home and business found no business records.

The man has been found guilty of obtaining a financial advantage by deception and was sentenced to 10 years in jail, which he will serve in addition to his existing term for unrelated offences.
