Brief’d
Company directors need to obtain Director ID by 30 November 2022. New Directors obtain ID before registering a company.
Details
Company directors are now required by law to apply for a director ID, which is a unique identifier that will help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.
Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) is responsible for administering the director ID initiative. ASIC is responsible for enforcing related offences.
When people must apply depends on when they became a director for the first time:
New directors appointed for the first time between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 must apply within 28 days of their appointment.
From 5 April 2022, intending new directors must apply before being appointed.
Existing directors appointed before 1 November 2021 have until 30 November 2022 to apply.
ABRS are now contacting newly appointed directors who have not met their obligation to apply for their director ID within 28 days of appointment, to make them aware of the obligation and encourage application.
Visit the ABRS website for more information and to apply for a director ID if required.
Applying is quick and free, and directors only need to do it once.
